I see a lot of people saying a Mary/Gary Sue is a character who is "perfect" (prettiest, most popular, smart, strong, ex cetra.) And yes, that is a Sue. But Sue's can be the emo-character to. I see people try to hard to be "diffrent." How about this.
A character who is the last of their pack, a pack of magical beings so they have powers, and they have a tough-hard exterior and generally hate people, not to mention they have a mental disorder.
Thats a Sue, too! A character is cliche. Its annoying to a see a character with no flaws, or a character with a stereotypical "flaws" (the ones that are "cool" like having a mental disorder.)
It takes a balance. Of things that seem "common" and stuff that seems diffrent, and maybe just subtle things. Subtly does a lot.
And I know, I might be a hypocrit. I have grouchy Narl with the horrible past. But I try to balance him with "normal" traits- He is straight (because Gay or Bi is apparently "anti-sue"), He's old, ect.
kjshdfaskjhdasd. Sues. One too many fanfics with a Sue @_@
however, I guess I can't talk.
Considering my OC has some sickly score on the Mary Sue quiz (like...70+ or something).
The problem with characters and getting a good plot is that almost everything has been done, or those who write tend to exist in the same sort of *waves hands around* scene...world. All teenagers in Europe, the U.S., and other parts know "prep", "jock", "emo", bi, gay, straight, vampire, princess, magic, quest, epic - lahdeedah. It's just...so MUCH has been written and thought, that it's pretty impossible to get something that isn't even somewhat cliche or over done =/

And I was also going to point at that, if not a single character is stereotypical/cliche in a whole story, then it's weird. P: if there are all these crazy kids running around, and nobody can relate to/understand any of them, it's like ".....???". The word cliche is around because cliches DO exist, real life is full of them, and writing tends to take on that real life norm of having the stereotypical cliches. Some stories NEED the cliche. P: I have met little goth/emos who smoke pot, hate their lives, and hurt themselves. I also know those who look like that, but are as obnoxious as a bottled pixie stick. And I have the misfortune of knowing mean cheerleaders, but I also know nice ones.
So...cliches are useful(especially plot cliches. Those can be a writer's best friend if they have writers block)but it's always nice to make sure not everything is a cliche and that there is some contrast to let things flow and develop so you HAVE a story. There always has to be a cliche catalyst, for example.

Well, then, generally, main characters are TECHNICALLY a cliche by differing from the norm, however, you can differ and not be cliched by doing so.... @_@
Keh, who cares about what's cliche and what isn't? If you spend too much time being afraid of cliches, you freeze up and never write. As long as you're having fun, screw it P:

I hate unimaginative characters like that, like when you're roleplaying humans they always have to be a young adult or in their teens, and either ' popular ', 'emo', 'evil', 'tomboyish', 'quiet' or 'CLASSIC GOOD GUY LOLS'.. with all of the same overused traits.
NO ONE in real life is like that, we all have our little quirks like random obsessive little habits, collecting stamps, for example, or never stepping on cracks in the pavement.. not many people are 'evil' for no reason, in fact, they may not even think of themself as evil. plus, not everyone has to have an OMG TRAGIC PASTPLZ.. that really annoys me D;
AND BLIND, ABANDONED AT BIRTH OR MUTE CHARACTERS... ARE EVERYWHERE o_o
